“Joining choir after I moved here was a natural for me,” reports Nina Axelsson. “I’ve been in choir since the fourth grade, and I love singing.” Axelsson, daughter of Rolf Axelsson and Katarina Levin, is an exchange student from Lund, Sweden. She has been living with host parents, Julie and Jim Hagstrom, since August 13, 2008.
Axelsson’s mother surrounded her with music while she was growing up. She played the piano, guitar, violin and flute and encouraged Axelsson and her brother, Petter, to sing along as she played. “She would play a little bit of everything and sometimes we would join in ,and sometimes we wouldn’t, but there was always music around us,” Axelsson explains.
Johanna Korner has been Axelsson's choir teacher in Lund since Axelsson was in the fourth grade. “She taught me how to be a technically better singer and was always fun and positive,” states Axelsson. She reports experiencing these same traits in Ms Yancey, OHS choir teacher.
Axelsson prefers singing and listening to rock and alternative rock music, especially older bands, such as Pink Floyd and the Clash. “Music back then use to be more real,” Axelsson explains. “They wrote their own music and didn’t rely as much on computers to fix it or mix it.”
When she returns to Sweden, Axelsson will have two more years of high school to complete, after which she plans to work and travel abroad. Axelsson projects “My perfect job would include traveling and meeting people around the world.”
