OHS senior Rachel Smith credits her parents, Carol and Michael Smith, with instigating her choir career. Smith states, “My parents are always very supportive of everything I do. So in the seventh grade when I wanted to join choir because I was always randomly singing songs, they encouraged me to give it a try.” Smith has been participating in choir since that time and is currently singing in OHS Cantabile choir, an all female audition choir. Smith also credits her sister Kelsey, a junior at OHS, with contributing to her rewarding choir experience. Smith helped her sister with her audition piece for cantabile choir and now they are able to sing together in the same choir everyday. Smith was also voted most improved junior in choir the same year her sister was voted most improved sophomore “My sister and I are best friends so being in the choir and sharing the same experiences is great” states Smith. “Kelsey plays the piano so we can practice the songs from class together; we always have a lot of fun.” Smith cites Ms. Jennifer Yancey, OHS choir teacher, as being a positive influence in her choir career. Smith reports “Ms Yancey teaches us life traits like how to be organized and how practicing is important to improving our skills. She teaches us to be leaders and sets a good example for us.” Smith credits Ms. Yancey with giving her confidence in herself and who she is. “You can be who you really are in choir’” Smith states. Fast, upbeat songs are a favorite with Smith, both to sing and listen to. “I have a lot of energy” explains Smith. “That’s the kind of person I am, fast and upbeat. I am always doing something. This type of music mirrors my personality.” Smith’s energetic personality is reflected in her extracurricular activities. She participates in track, volleyball and wrestling at OHS, plays club volleyball and is president and treasurer of her 4H club, through which she participates in many community service projects. Smith plans on attending MATC in the Fall, with the goal of becoming a dental hygienist. |
