OHS senior Ariana Bonsett-Veal, daughter of John and Jan Bonsett-Veal, has a passion for singing. Bonsett-Veal confirms, “Except when other classes have gotten in the way, I have always been in choir.” Bonsett-Veal credits choir with enhancing her musical passion through introduction to new types of music. “In choir we sing songs from other times, other countries and other languages, and we sing a lot of different types of music. I like to sing all of it, ” Bonsett-Veal exclaims. Ms. Yancey, OHS choir teacher, has taught Bonsett-Veal that singing and learning to sing can be fun. “In October, Ms. Yancey had us do our warm-ups to "The Ghost of Tom". It made things a little different and fun,” states Bonsett-Veal. She reports that Ms. Yancey has helped her learn to sing songs without using words, relying only on note recognition and sounds, a technique known as solfege. Not only has this been a fun learning experience for her, but also it has increased her confidence in singing and writing music. Bonsett-Veal's father, John, sings and acts in the community, and Bonsett-Veal has a passion for musical theater too. She cites the choir trips to the musicals "Rent" and "Wicked" as being two of her most memorable choir experiences. The style of music and dance found in musical theater has been incorporated into the choir’s pieces sung at OHS Spring Variety Shows, and Bonsett-Veal expresses a great deal of pleasure in being able to participate in these programs. Bonsett-Veal’s future plans include becoming a kindergarten teacher, and she is already planning ways to use her passion for music to help her students learn. “I study flash cards and think of musical ways to remember them, ” Bonsett-Veal explains. “I could help my future students learn their numbers or ABC’s using music, too.” Outside of school, Bonsett-Veal works in the Peoples United Methodist Church’s nursery during Saturday and Sunday worship services. She has attended three mission trips with this church and has volunteered at various food pantries in the area. |
