Music provides a balance in the life of OHS senior Nicole Cunningham. Six days a week, Cunningham energetically trains with her competitive gymnastic team at “Gymfinity” in Fitchburg. At school, she admits that one of the reasons she loves to sing is that it is a calming experience. Cunningham explains, &“I love to sing and need my daily dose of music expression; it’s really calming.” Cunningham reports she enjoys listening to emotionally aggressive metal and punk rock music. She also enjoys rai, a mixture of Arabic and western pop music that is fun and easy to dance to. Cunningham has far different singing tastes. “I love to sing church choir and renaissances types of music. I like the smoothness of the music, and the way the different parts blend together. It’s spiritual, divine and soothing.” Cunningham states being in choir is not only calming, but also a lot of fun. The OMS madrigal dinners directed by Ms. Heather Rattman, OMS choir teacher, are full of fun memories for Cunningham. “Everyone was so crazy and funny. It was a real adrenaline rush” reminisces Cunningham. She credits Ms Jennifer Yancey ,OHS choir teacher, with teaching singing techniques in a fun, innovative way. “Ms Yancey uses analogies of every day objects, like the power ball in the lottery, to help us understand how we are supposed to sing certain notes or parts of songs. They seem weird at first, but then when you think about them, they make sense and end up really helping,” states Cunningham. Cunningham, daughter of Debbie and Roger Cunningham, is a member of the OHS National Honor Society and recently received an All-Conference Scholar Award. She is involved in the OHS organizations ECOS and Link Crew. Cunningham teaches gymnastics at “Gymfinity”. She plans on attending college in the Fall, majoring in science and linguistics. |
