Voice lessons in the eighth grade, to help her audition for parts in plays and musicals, led OHS senior Monica Dahl to join choir that same year. “I’ve always loved music in general, and I found out I really like to sing,” explains Dahl. Dahl credits her voice teacher, Kassie Coleman, with helping her develop a greater musical reportoire and skills set. She feels the individual time and focus on developing her personal voice has been invaluable. Dahl’s sister, Angela, a musical theater major, has helped her perfect her personal style through talking about their music and working with each other on solos.
Dahl also cites participation in the annual solo-ensemble competition as being a very rewarding experience. Dahl has competed in the solo category every year since the eighth grade. “It’s nice to know where you are with singing and to get someone else’s opinion on your voice or other things you do, like fidgeting, when you sing,” Dahl explains. “It is also like practicing and preparing for something like an audition. You have to deal with things like nerves or having an accompanist; all good experiences to have in you vocal career.”
Dahl has participated in the OHS musicals "The Wizard of Oz", and "The Sound of Music". She also was chosen to participate in the Badger Conference Honors Choir her junior year, which she cites as a great chance to sing more challenging music at a higher level then she had previously experienced.
Dahl plays club hockey and is on the Verona Lacrosse team. She works at a video game store in West Towne mall. Dahl plans on attending college in the fall, majoring in environmental engineering. She hopes to continue singing and acting while pursuing her degree.
