Class of 2009
Molly Hayman

Molly HaymanRegarding her choir career, OHS senior Molly Hayman reflects, “I quit choir after the third grade, but sometime in a later grade, decided to join again, and I’m really glad I did. Choir has really added something to my school experience. I’ve had the opportunity to get close to a lot of girls that I may not have gotten to know outside of choir.” Academic stress reduction has been a positive outcome of choir participation for Hayman, too. “It can be overwhelming at times, having a schedule full of academically challenging classes. Choir is very challenging, too, but due to the way the classroom atmosphere is set up, it really helps me to de-stress; it’s a great change of pace.”

Hayman credits Ms Heather Rattman, OMS choir teacher, and Ms JenniferYancey, OHS choir teacher, with fanning her enthusiasm for choir. “The love of music exudes from them and is contagious. You can’t help be enthusiastic when you’re around them,” states Hayman. She also credits Ms Yancey with increasing her appreciation for different types of music. Hayman explains “Ms Yancey has us sing many different types of music. Sometimes I may not like a song but she will tell me to say ‘I’m not quite sure about this one yet’ instead. Usually, I end up really liking the song.”

Singing at the Wisconsin Choral Directors conference in January was one of Hayman’s most memorable choir experiences. “The nerves, the adrenaline rush, the bonding experience that came with all the extra hard work we had to do to prepare for the concert, and the fact that we had the best performance possible, made it an unbelievable experience” enthused Hayman.

Outside of choir Hayman participates in ECOS, LINK crew, is president of OHS’s National Honor Society and vice-president of student council. She played varsity tennis, is co-captain of her competitive dance team and is an active member of her church youth group.

Recently receiving the Wisconsin Academic Scholarship award, Hayman plans on attending UW Madison in the fall, majoring in English language and composition.
