Music is an integral part of OHS senior Breanna Huston's life. “I’ve been in choir so long I can’t remember when I started,” states Huston. “I enjoy music so much and have always loved to sing. It is a really big part of my life.”
Huston sings in the concert choir and plays flute and piccolo in band and orchestra classes at OHS. She has played the flute and sung with St. Johns Lutheran Church worship band since the 7th grade and has taken dance classes at Stoughton Center for the Performing Arts for 5 years. Huston is also involved in marching band and winter guard.
Huston credits her parents, Gudie and Dave Huston, for making music a necessary part of her everyday life. “Both my parents played instruments in their high school band, and both sang in a church choir in college,”Huston explains.” My mom still sings everywhere, at church, in the house, in the car; it just seems natural for me to sing, too.” Huston reports she enjoys all types of music equally. “In the car I listen to Z104 pop music, Q106 county music and 102.5 Christian music. I’m switching radio stations all the time,” admits Huston.
Last year Huston was invited to sing in the Badger Conference Honors Choir. This turned out to be one of her most memorable choir experiences. “It was so neat to sing for a whole day with students I didn’t know and then hold a concert at night in this incredibly beautiful church,” explains Huston. “It was really cool to see what you could accomplish in just one day.” Huston equates participation in choir with deepening her knowledge of music theory, resulting in the ability to sight read music and recognize pitches. She feels this has made her a much stronger and more confident singer.
Huston has participated in mission trips the past two years and recently returned from a two-week exchange trip to Japan. These experiences, in conjunction with her love of music, have influenced her post high school plans to major/minor in flute performance and Japanese.
